Join us for conversation with Charles Shirō Inouye

Charles Inouye’s new book The End of the World, Plan B has just been released by Kofford Books!
At the end of February, Charles will visit Utah to discuss his book at a series of venues.  We invite you to join us for one of those events at our home.

In the book Charles compares how several religious traditions—and the secular traditions resulting from rejections of state-sponsored religions--think about and invite the end of the world, and he makes the argument that we humans are (of course) doing it all wrong. That is, by envisioning an apocalypse that dispenses justice, we dangerously invite destruction and the end of humanity; instead, our end-game thinking should be grounded in a compassion that recognizes our shared sorrows and in hope for an Apocalypse that yields a shared happiness.
[Well, that’s what I’ve gathered so far. The book was only released two days ago so I’m in the first third of it.]

The End of the World comes with stiff criticisms of modernity, a sunshiny  hope that postmodernism offers answers for much of what ails us, a fascinating comparison of multiple religious traditions (including most prominently Mahayana Buddhism and Mormonism), and a refreshing respect for Japanese animism.
If you are interested in the subject, but can’t meet with us, you could catch him at several other locations on the previous Friday or Saturday, or the following Monday. (See a separate forthcoming link for information as it becomes available).
